With a year under his belt at RedCAT Systems–let’s introduce our Lead Designer Gabe Gatchalian as this month’s Employee Spotlight! Gabe’s work transforms the online and public appearance for the company. Now, let’s meet the man behind the brand.
How did you get into design work?
I was heavily influenced by cartoons at an early age, which led to a passion for street art and storytelling. These interests went hand-in-hand with my fashion obsession, researching all the trending brands and noting how their creative processes aligned to my own process.
Art has always been an avenue of self-expression throughout my life. I use these skills and experiences to help others express their ideas and purpose through art and design.
How have recent technology innovations influenced your process?
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in design, I’ve chosen to lean in and embrace it for what it is. I use it to my advantage rather than get overwhelmed by its complexities.
Many of the tools I already work with now have AI integrated, which has significantly cut down my design time. AI, combined with collaborative platforms, has helped streamline everything from brainstorming to final delivery—allowing me to focus more on creativity and strategy.
What are a few of your favorite projects in the last year?
Branding is truly my passion. It’s been incredibly rewarding this last year to experiment and push creative boundaries. We’ve used this time to rethink what’s been done—then ask ourselves how we can do it differently.
My favorite project has been the RedCAT rebrand. It’s a constantly evolving initiative, and we’ve approached it holistically—from developing a fresh color palette and refined logo treatment to establishing a distinct typographic style.
We apply these elements consistently across all platforms from web design and internal programs to conference and social media materials. There is now a strong and cohesive visual identity. I’m proud of how far we’ve taken the brand—we’ve truly elevated it in every sense.
RedCAT provides the opportunity to give back to our communities. What can you tell us about the mentorship program at your alma mater?
I graduated from Fresno State and was fortunate to transition into a full-time role there, where I spent a meaningful part of my career. During my time at the university, I had the opportunity to establish a Student Graphic Assistant position. This created a space for students to gain real-world experience, build their portfolios, and receive mentorship through hands-on work at the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
I decided to take a leap and shift from higher education to the tech industry. I’m committed to the mission of the university and stay connected by mentoring students and consulting on community-oriented projects at the Lyles Center.
We obviously have to talk about your love of professional wrestling. Who are some of your favorite wrestlers and how did you get your family involved?
Professional wrestling has always been a major highlight of my childhood—especially the iconic Attitude Era of the ’90s. It’s naturally become a part of my kids’ lives since I’ve never stopped watching it!
It’s tough to pick just one favorite, but my top three of all time would have to be Stone Cold Steve Austin, Booker T, and Kurt Angle.
I know you love merch and collector items. What would you say is your favorite wrestling souvenir? Any other collectibles worth mentioning?
I definitely have to mention my Attitude Era Winged Eagle belt signed by Kurt Angle. I bring it to every wrestling event I attend. It’s a cool flex and something I hope to pass down for generations.
And we have to know. How many baseball hats do you own? Is there a favorite and why?
I have more than 50 hats easily, but I really only rotate through about five regularly. My favorite is probably my Anaheim Angels hat—embroidered with my angels’ middle names, Grace and Faith. It’s special to me because it also represents my core values and beliefs.
Thank you, Gabe, for sharing the importance of brand cohesion, creating space for others, and the avenues of self-expression.
